Manchester claims to have something for everyone and offers numerous attractions including galleries, museums, superb shopping and stunning Victorian Architecture. Despite being steeped in ancient British and Roman history, Manchester is uniquely modern, individual and European in the sense that it retains the village style areas in the city, each with its own unique atmosphere.
Like Birmingham, Manchester has a proud industrial heritage and it was when the city built a dedicated ship canal that it truly became a world class port and trading centre.
It is Manchester's Castlefield area that perhaps best captures the city's rich layers of history. Castlefield was home to the Romans for 400 years from 79 AD. Medieval Manchester grew around the Cathedral area, while Castlefield became a deer park, transforming during the mid 1700's into the centre of the Industrial Revolution.
Manchester boasts a large number of attractions including award winning museums and 15 galleries and the city has a compact centre, with the majority of major attractions within easy walking distance of each other.

Manchester's was the proud host of the Commonwealth Games in 2002 and as a result Manchester benefited from inward investment into sports and sports venues. The city is home to the National Cycling Centre where our 2008 Olympic Cycling Heroes are based and train. Perhaps most famously Manchester has two leading football clubs - Manchester City and Manchester United – both acting as international ambassadors for football and showcasing the premier league.
Regards entertainment and eating out, Manchester closely rivals other major cities in offering a huge choice of authentic international cuisine from over twenty different nationalities and outside of London, it boasts more theatres than any other UK city. Music is also a permanent fixture in this city and many of the Brit bands originate from this great city all playing in their choice in the thousands of venues, churches, clubs and pubs that dot this city.
