Culture in Glasgow

The City of Glasgow is situated on the banks of the River Clyde and boasts a bustling, friendly, vibrant feel. This magnificent city proudly mixes its architectural heritage, alongside excellent shopping facilities (renowned as the best in Scotland) and a number of additional culturally fascinating sites of interest.

Renowned for being the 'European City of Culture', Glasgow didn't get this title without warrant. Tourists from around the world flock to Glasgow for its cultural entertainment including the breathtaking ballet and opera and classical musical offering from the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra - all located here in the heart of Scotland and adding to the reason Glasgow gained its United Nations City of Music label.

For those with a love of the silver screen, Glasgow is home to many cinemas and also boasts many theatres as well as playing host to festivals throughout the year.

Glasgow is perhaps most famous for being the birthplace of the world famous architect and designer, Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868 - 1928). Mackintosh is best known for his design of The Glasgow School of Art, which is open to the public and at the Willow Tea Rooms, you can enjoy tea in the original Room De-Luxe as conceived by Mackintosh. The House for an Art Lover is situated in the beautiful parkland setting of Bellahouston Park and is well worth a visit - designed by Mackintosh in 1901, it was only recently built to his plans in 1994, providing an excellent resource for visitors as a cultural attraction and exclusive dining venue.

Glasgow Science Centre is a gleaming titanium crescent-shaped building, overlooking the Clyde and has three floors packed with hundreds of interactive exhibits that will fascinate you. As part of the complex, there is an IMAX cinema and the Glasgow Tower - at 127 metres it is the tallest freestanding building in Scotland. Explore the workings of this unique piece of machinery then take the 2½ minute ride to the Glasgow Tower cabin to enjoy unrivalled views over the city and surrounding countryside.

Other architectural gems to be found include Glasgow Cathedral. Dating from the 12th and 13th centuries, Glasgow Necropolis, with many beautifully designed tombs and the City Chambers offers a magnificent staircase and sumptuous banqueting hall.

As well as making use of the many open spaces that Glasgow has to offer (the Botanic Gardens being the largest of them), visitors may also wish to visit Hampden Park, (Scotland's National Stadium) and Kelvin Hall International Sports Arena.

The Kelvingrove Art Gallery is Scotland's premier museum and art gallery and is one of Europe's great civic art collections. The museum is the most popular free-to-enter visitor attraction in Scotland and the most visited museum in the United Kingdom outside of London. For important collections of fine art, medieval art, stained glass and tapestries, visit The Burrell Collection in Pollok Park.

For gastronomes Glasgow offers the perfect dining experience reflecting its diverse cultural attitudes in the restaurants and eateries of the city. You can choose from numerous restaurants, cafes, bistros and tea-rooms that specialise in everything from traditional Scottish food to international cuisine.
